Chronologie en chronografie

Antieke staten gebruikten een veelheid aan vormen van tijdrekening en kalenders, die regionaal sterk konden verschillen en bovendien doorheen de tijd veranderden. De eponieme datering met archonten in Athene en consuls in Rome is wellicht het best gekend, maar er bestond ook een veelheid aan antieke era’s (met een tijdrekening vanaf een bepaald punt). Antieke kalenders waren vaak een combinatie van maan- en zonkalenders. In bijzonder de klassieke Griekse kalenders kunnen nog altijd niet perfect gecorreleerd worden aan de moderne Gregoriaanse kalender. De Juliaanse kalender was geïnspireerd op de kalender van het Egyptische burgerlijk jaar.
